Makeshift is a short-term experiment in the art of making a publication, organized with Silver Galleon Press, Christopher Roeleveld, and a rotating team of guest artists, writers, and programmers. A creative exploration into artist-generated criticism, Makeshift features a reader with contributions from Brandon Alvendia, Elijah Burgher, Zachary Cahill, ESCAPE GROUP, Michelle Grabner, Jason Foumberg, Lane Relyea, Abigail Satinsky, Bert Stabler, and Brook Sinkinson Withrow; a series of discussions and live critical responses to the fair also at the publication table; as well as a "release party" at the Inkwell Bar at EXPO Chicago on Saturday September 22 from 6-9 PM. Silver Galleon Press is Brandon Alvendia's nomadic book-printing outfit designed for rapid participatory on-demand publishing.
Makeshift experiments with the forms that art criticism can take, broadly interpreting the term "publication" beyond the production of written texts and printed images to the opening of poetic space for artists to collaboratively and creatively engage discourse surrounding their work. Inspired in part by Oulipo, a group of French writers that used writing constraints to drive content and style into new literary forms, Makeshift similarly uses constraints of the fair's structure to challenge the concepts, ideas and decisions of the artist-critic.
The publication table will be open from 3-7 PM daily during the fair. Readers will be available at the table for $20
At 4 PM each day, please join us for discussions/social time/bookmaking at the table, led by guest programmers.
Schedule of programmers:
Thursday: Brandon Alvendia
Friday: Brook Sinkinson Withrow, Tagteam-Tour
Saturday: Chicago Artist Writers Social with Jason Lazarus & Sofia Leiby
Sunday: Coffee party and collective book-binding of materials accumulated over the weekend

threewalls has joined with the Culture Counts coalition, an alliance of organizations in Chicago that are banding together to make sure the plan becomes a real policy win for the arts and arts education in Chicago. To build that base of support, we need to hear from you. The last time the city created a cultural plan was 25 years ago under the administration of Mayor Harold Washington. It was filled with forward-thinking ideas that shaped the arts in Chicago today -- from a city-funded grant program for the arts, to the downtown theatre district, and arts groups in residence at Chicago parks. Now it's time to adopt a new vision and new strategies for culture in Chicago. What we do today will shape what the arts look like decades from now.
Join us in showing your support for arts and culture in Chicago and a bold and sustainable cultural plan for the city. Sign the Culture Counts petition! Sign it here
