ThreeWalls is pleased to announce a solo exhibition for its first artist resident, Daniel Barrow. Barrow's exhibition will feature drawings, prints, small sculptures and an abstraction of a major new performance work that Barrow began while on residency at ThreeWalls. The artwork will be on view from Friday, February 20 through Friday, March 19, 2004.
Winnipeg-based media artist Daniel Barrow attempts to "return to a former and nostalgic experience of stimulus" in a melancholic pastiche of popular culture from the recent past and out-of-date technologies. While on residency at ThreeWalls, Barrow has begun a new performance piece employing an overhead projector to present, layer and manipulate drawings in a real-time animation. In this new, scripted work, "Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry," a sensitive garbage man recycles garbage into art in an effort to cope with traumatic occurrences he witnesses while aimlessly trash-collecting. An abstraction of this work-in-progress will be performed by Barrow at 8:00 p.m. during the opening reception on Friday, February 20. During that performance, Barrow will also perform an earlier, overhead projector performance, "Looking for Love in the Hall of Mirrors.” The entire presentation, including the old and new work, will last approximately forty (40) minutes.
Also on display will be an editioned series of balsa wood planes decorated with the artist's silk-screen prints. The drawing on the toy gliders reference vignettes from the adventures of the sanitation worker/protagonist from "Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry." Barrow's trademark sentimental yearning will also be evidenced by an original suite of drawings on found, decorative papers.
Daniel Barrow has exhibited widely in Canada and abroad. Recently, Barrow has exhibited at The Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff Centre for the Arts), Hoxton Hall (London, UK), The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Gallery 101(Ottawa). Most recently, Barrow's overhead projector performance, "The Face of Everything," was included in the group exhibition "We Need To Talk – Uneasy Props and Propositions" curated Middlemanagement for ThreeWalls.
