Video and performance artist Jillian McDonald (New York) has developed a body of work investigating the American entertainment industry, using the archetypes generated by Hollywood as a substrate for shrewd and humorous commentary on the manufacturing of contemporary American behavior, mindset and relationships. In her latest series of videos, McDonald concentrates on the horror film genre and the manufacturing of fear. Vamp It Up watches McDonald transform herself into a vampire while en-route on public transportation while a haunted chandelier shivers and shifts in reaction to the viewer in the interactive video, The Sparkling. Stripping away plot, character development and the expectation of violence, McDonald teases the audience’s expectations of the malevolent by revealing the chicanery behind the show.

With group and solo exhibition credits throughout Canada and the United States and numerous awards and residencies, Jillian McDonald is an artist to watch. Her work has been exhibited at YYZ (Toronto), Neutral Ground (Regina), The Soap Factory (Minneapolis), MMoCA (Madison) and Moti Hasson Gallery (NYC) to name just a few. Web projects include a Whitney Museum Artport commission and inclusion in the Istanbul Web Biennial. McDonald’s work has been covered most recently by NY Arts, The Times New Jersey, The New York Times and The National Post. She received her MFA from Hunter College in 1999.
