“Every time you think you’ve got something”

On a recent trip to New York I am grateful to have seen DeKooning: A Retrospective at MOMA.  The show begins with a huge wall of six photographs of “Woman I” (1950-52) in process. The images show the painting in it’s various stages as a reminder that a painting is composed of many paintings, moments, and decisions. The painter is usually the only one who gets to see the changes and see the evolution of their own sequence of decision-making but that doesn’t mean that each moment of change or alteration is not of importance.

In my work I am continually changing, moving, reorganizing, adjusting, starting over, throwing away, within my general movement in the studio, within my “products” of paintings, sculptures and photographic work, and in my life. For my residency at threewalls I want to further explore my interest in those moments of change.

Treating the room itself as a blank canvas, like layers of a painting, I will alter the installation each week as if exposing one layer of the “painting” before I continue on with it. Of course elements of the previous week will always peek through. My photographic process of the space and process of changing the “painting” or room will be folded back in to acknowledge the decisions and explorations of space.

Each week I will have a new version of the piece with new photographs and/or paintings to accompany it on view at threewalls from 12 pm to 2 pm.

Veronica Bruce works across multiple disciplines of sculpture, photography, painting and hybrids of these genres with the vocabulary of painting at the core. During her residency with threewalls she plans to continue this practice of observation, play and interaction with materials, while also working towards establishing a connection for artists to give and take “unwanted” materials at Chicago facilities. If you are an artist who utilizes found or discarded materials in Chicago please contact her at veronica@veronicabruceart.com.
