Artist Spotlight Series: A. Martinez

In this week’s newsletter, we’re spotlighting the work of 2022-2023 In-Session Fellow A. Martinez in this next edition of our Artist Spotlight series! In April of 2023, A. Martinez and Tulika Ladsariya presented “In Reciprocity: Reclaiming Narratives of Care,” centered around intergenerational care.

Describe your practice in two sentences.

I am a poet, interdisciplinary visual and social practice artist, and facilitator. My work explores ritual, grief, ecology, and motherhood in a practice of noticing, learning, and remembering. I am an interdisciplinary artist with a basis in books, words, painting, and gatherings—for me it’s essential to let my ideas develop and dictate the form which they become, and my themes often have multiple forms over their lifetime. My social practice involves participatory community gatherings that prioritize collective and generative knowledge sharing.
Can you share about your time with Threewalls? What did you take away from your time with Threewalls that has impacted your practice?
I am so grateful for my time as a Threewalls In-Session Fellow. The thing that still sits with me years later is how much I felt cared for by Threewalls. I also felt that I was given explicit permission to slow down on an idea and that felt so luxurious compared to what I’m used to as an artist and creative producer. I have tried to maintain that space as I work on new projects. One of my favorite parts of the fellowship was working with my cohort. It was such a brilliant group of artists with thoughtfully chosen projects, and I loved getting to know everyone through our time together.

What are you looking forward to in the year ahead creatively? Are there any upcoming projects you would like to share more about?

TURN by A. Martinez

I just released an artist book and accompanying cassette tape entitled TURN in May, which is a handbound limited-edition featuring thirteen poems and five relief prints addressing the isolation, vulnerability, strength, and joy of the changing of life’s seasons. This project, partially supported by 3Arts, was really a labor of love that I worked on over the last few years, and my first poetry book, so I am thrilled to have it completed and out in the world to share. I’m also very excited to be preparing for my first solo exhibition happening at the Carlson Tower Gallery this November! This show En la casa de Mamá considers the question, How do we uncover/discover the stories of those we no longer have access to? — in an evolving body of visual art, installation, and social practice work based on my late father, my grandmother (Mamá), and our family’s homes in Santo Domingo, Brooklyn, and Cleveland. This work is rooted in family interviews and photo archives, visitation of family sites, and historical research, but it is also a reimagining of our stories lost through death, distance, immigration, and assimilation.

Describe tu práctica en dos frases

Soy poeta, artista visual interdisciplinaria y de práctica social y facilitadora. Mi obra explora lo ritual, el duelo, la ecología y la maternidad a través de una práctica de reconocimiento, aprendizaje y de conmemoración. Soy una artista interdisciplinaria que se basa en libros, palabras, la pintura y los encuentros—para mi es esencial el dejar que mis ideas se desarrollen y dicten la forma enlace que se van a convertir y es común que los temas que trabajo tomes distintas formas en su ciclo de vida. Mi práctica social integra encuentros comunitarios que invitan a la participación y que dan prioridad a compartir sabiduría colectiva y generativa. 

¿Puedes compartir algo sobre tu tiempo en Threewalls? ¿Qué cosas de tu tiempo en Threewalls han impactado tu práctica?

Estoy muy agradecida de haber sido becaria de En-Sesión en Threewalls. Una de las cosas que aún estoy pensando, años después, es en lo mucho que me sentí cuidada por Threewalls. También sentí que me habían dado permiso explicito para tomarme mi tiempo con una idea y eso se sintió como un lujo comparado a lo que estoy acostumbrada como artista y productora creativa. He estado tratando de mantener este espacio mientras trabajo en proyectos nuevos. Una de mis partes favoritas del programa fue trabajar con mi grupo. Es un grupo de artistas fantástico con proyectos escogidos cuidadosamente y me encantó conocer a todos los participantes durante nuestro tiempo compartido.

¿Que esperas de este año en el aspecto creativo? ¿Hay proyectos en puerta que quisieras compartir con nosotros? 

En mayo acabo de publicar un libro de artista acompañado de un cassette titulado TURN (vuelta), es una edición limitada y encuadernada a mano que contiene trece poemas y cinco grabados de relieve que hablan sobre el aislamiento, la vulnerabilidad, la fortaleza y la alegría de los cambios en las diferentes etapas de la vida. Este proyecto, apoyado parcialmente por 3Arts, es resultado de una labor de amor que he estado trabajando los últimos años. Es mi primer libro de poesía y estoy muy emocionada de haberlo completado y que este listo para compartirlo con el mundo. (https://www.alyssahydemartinez.com/turn-artist-book) 

¡También estoy muy emocionada con los preparativos de mi primer exposición individual que se llevará a cabo en la Carlson Tower Gallery en noviembre! Esta exposición, titulada En la casa de Mamá, se basa en la pregunta ¿Cómo descubrimos las historias de aquellos a los que ya no tenemos acceso? — es un cuerpo de obra visual en evolución, instalación y trabajo de práctica social basados en mi difunto padre, mi abuela (Mamá) y nuestros hogares familiares en Santo Domingo, Brooklyn y Cleveland. Esta obra tiene sus raíces en entrevistas con mi familia, archivos fotográficos, visitas a lugares de familia e investigación histórica, pero también funciona para re imaginar nuestras historias perdidas por el fallecimiento, la distancia, la migración y la asimilación.
