Thriving Wage

From Living to thriving

We are proud to present the From Living to Thriving policy report, developed in partnership with culture/Math. This report is comprised of nearly three years of qualitative and quantitative research to frame our definition of support for artists and our dreams for a world where artists can exist beyond a place to living to a space of thriving. As Threewalls has evolved over the past eight years, so has our approach to compensating artists and shaping care-centered practices that align with our mission and the changes we wish to see manifested in the field.

From Living to Thriving is shaped by a Black feminist ethic that pushes against the patronage model to consider a more holistic approach to artist support. Additionally, it addresses the need for a direct and comprehensive analysis of pay equity for artists through human-centered, intersectional policy development.

FROM LIVING TO THRIVING

This report presents a survey of the following areas and their role in living wage/pay equity research:

Looking outward:

• The importance of cooperative/collective economics

• A brief case study of the WPA as an example of governmental

• Firsthand accounts from artists and practitioners

Looking inward:

• Threewalls’ organizational ethos and commitment to living wage

• How we compare nationally with regard to: wage, care/caregiving, disparities connected to the wealth gap, pay equity, etc.

Most importantly, we offer considerations for organizations and funders invested in this work. We cannot chart a path towards a new world for artists without the collective, and we hope you will join us.
